Memorial Bridge Repens to Vehicle Traffic

Date: 11/20/09

MEMORIAL BRIDGE REOPENING TODAY TO VEHICLE TRAFFIC

REPAIRS TO THE PORTSMOUTH, NH – KITTERY ME BRIDGE CARRYING US 1

OVER PISCATAQUA RIVER COMPLETED FIVE DAYS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) and the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) announce the planned reopening to motor vehicle traffic of the Memorial Bridge carrying US Route 1 over the Piscataqua River between Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Kittery, Maine.

The lift bridge is scheduled to reopen at 1:30 PM today (11/20/09).  Upon its reopening, the Memorial Bridge will be posted at a three-ton weight limit, effectively banning all vehicles except automobiles and light pickup trucks.  The bridge had been posted with a ten-ton weight limit since July 10, 2009.

The Memorial Bridge was closed to motor vehicle traffic on October 16 for necessary structural repairs.  By working long shifts and weekends, the contractor was able to complete the repair work five days ahead of schedule.  The Department would like to thank Cianbro Corporation for their extra effort in accomplishing this work.

Cianbro Corporation of Pittsfield, Maine was the contractor for the $148,500 project.  The repair costs are being shared equally by New Hampshire and Maine.
